Project Update - Lake Sammamish House

Over the past two years I've had the pleasure of working on an amazing coastal inspired Lake Sammamish waterfront home. While we are still working on furnishing the interiors, a few of the rooms of the house were published this month in 425 Magazine so I thought I'd share it with you.

Entry. We are still looking for the perfect piece of furniture for this room. We used shiplap through out the entire house to give the house some character and make the spaces feel more comfortable as the ceilings are extremely high.

In the kitchen we did a custom metal hood, a combination of mirrored and glass front cabinets and a dark grey island to designate it as the focal point of the room. The bar stools in this room will be the statement piece when they are done as they are vintage french louis bar stools with cowhide seats. They take my breath away and I can't wait as they change the feel of the entire room.

The family room. Since this picture was taken there is a larger seagrass rug, a larger custom zebra ottoman (this one is actually mine that they homeowner was using until theirs arrived), a metal and wood custom console and some fabulous white lamps. The room feels warm and cozy now as it is their main gathering spot.

There are so many fabulous rooms in this house that I'll post more pictures as they are finished.

Barn Delight

Joni at Cote de Texas always finds amazing houses to blog about. Her latest post, Lynnstone in Mississippi, is no exception. The main house is a whopping 27,000 square feet and is truly amazing. But I especially loved the barn and guest quarters. No details were left to chance and the space is so welcoming and comfortable.

Those are some lucky horses. The stonework, beam detailing and lighting directly ties into the exterior.

The guest house above the stables is a great blend of the rustic and elegant. I think I could be happy here.

As I was watching the BCS Championship game tonight with my boys, I found myself flipping through this months issue of Veranda (the score was 15-0 so you have to give me a break). Tonight a Windsor Smith great room stopped me in my tracks. The grass cloth walls, black windows, mirror, and the white Moroccan coffee table. BUT, that camel back sofa had me swooning. The turquoise antique textile is so fun and vibrant yet so soothing at the same time. And on a camel back sofa no less. The sofa that's usually associated with an old stale room or your grandparents house. The print and color draws me in and makes me want to retire to this room on any given night. Even to watch a football game.

Then I remembered seeing the sofa and coffee table in a previous room of her house that was featured in House Beautiful. The infamous pink room in fact where they were secondary elements to the pink walls and yellow chairs. It was not my favorite as there were too many elements for my eye to absorb.

Just goes to show you that even with the same elements two rooms can be so drastically different- even from the same designer. But, it also confirms my belief that great furniture can be versatile and can move from room to room depending on your needs and your vision for the time. If you love it, you will have it forever and it's worth the investment. So go pick up that camel back sofa you've seen at the neighborhood antique store and reinvent it with a fun vibrant fabric (or if you are less daring a timeless white denim) a la Windsor Smith.

Barbara Westbrook's Office

I've always dreamed of having my office space in a cottage. Barbara Westbrook's office in Atlanta makes me wish there were more spaces like this in Seattle. It represents her aesthetic

and would make going to work a dream.

The exterior is so charming yet polished.

And the entry so welcoming.

The lovely communal workspace for the four employees. All white and seagrass are the perfect background to soothe the designers daily visual overdose.

The work area with all the memos and samples. This is my idea of heaven. Throw in a baguette and some wine and I'd never want to leave.

Barbara at her workspace. I love that she's still in the middle of the action but that she has her own worktable. I like stuff and I like action - this would be the perfect setup for me. Check out the antique French window that separates the main workspace with the conference room. Gorgeous.

Outside the box

As we rang in 2012 and the usual question of New Year's Resolutions was posed, I found myself thinking of the normal response: get organized, exercise, appreciate the little things in life, enjoy friends and family, eat less pizza and fast food ( okay, so maybe this just applies to me), etc. The list is too long to post about.

However, what I really want to do this year is to think outside the box. Challenge myself to see everyday items or rooms in a new light. Keep growing, keep reinventing as the images below demonstrate.

A sliding barn door as a shower door

A pop of color in an unexpected place like moulding while leaving the walls white.

Taking an everyday item like the Ikea Expedit bookcases and making them look extraordinary (and expensive)

Using a garage door instead of a door (if only I lived in a climate where I could do this more than 2 months a year)

Bringing an outside planter and boxwood inside

Hanging a mirror the last place I would want one, but so wonderful.

Using lighting as the art, brilliant Mrs. Howard.

And rethinking an ordinary attic space into an incredible, sophisticated 4 person guest room. So outside the box.

Gift Guide: For Her... or Me

Yet another guide from a blogger, but it's become one of my favorite parts of the holidays -- seeing what everyone puts together from around the internet. And it might just have the convenient side effect of making me digest all my thoughts about what I've seen lately. I have the bad habit of getting brief fleeting moments of "Ohh, I love that," and then just as quickly as it came in to my head, poof, it's gone. And you would be lucky to get more than a blank stare from me if asked what I wanted for Christmas or my birthday. But, these are a few things that have caught my eye for ladies lately.

While this first thing isn't specifically for ladies, I think it's tops on my list. My older sister brought hers to Thanksgiving (it was an early birthday gift from her husband, but seeing as how the box is marked KINDLE FIRE on the outside, there was no way of concealing it's contents, shoppers beware). The price point ($199) is amazing and as Amazon is my go-to for everything, it makes way more sense to me to have a tablet like this than an ipad, especially since it can run Flash (major downside to the ipad... gotta say).

I've really been loving the versatility of an oversized clutch, I think it's so easy to throw it in another bag if you need to, and then take it out to dinner or whereever you need to look a little polished. This one from nordstrom is a good buy and much like my obsession with it in interiors, the python makes me love it here, too.

Shopbop has some incredible stuff right now, but these pyrite studs caught my eye. They measure in at an inch long, so we're not talking "daytime earring" for many people (although, I do wish there were smaller so they could be) but can you imagine how striking and unusual they would be on someone? And for the bold, daytime would be so pretty. I think they're a great price too, in comparison to other earrings of the same size and impact: 197.50.

And I had to throw these in because they are insane, but I think it's an error on Shopbop's site because the photo doesn't match the description for these earrings, so it's tease! But how incredible are these little Chanel studs? I love them, and I think I would never take them off.

And because clearly I'm in a jewelry state of mind -- this set of stackable rings from Micheal Kors is a knock-out and looks truly high end. It looks like the sizes are being snapped up quickly, which might end up being the downside.

And lastly, I love the idea of a case of wine for a gift. I think it's totally indulgent and something a woman rarely does for themselves unless they are in a vacation state of mind (you know it's happened to you at some tasting somewhere -- all of a sudden you're buying the farm and you have no idea how to get it all home) but sometimes there is a really yummy value wine that would make the perfect luxury gift and a great wine to pull out for the day-to-day, no guilt! These two are favorites and aren't in shops all the time, so it's a bit more special than a trip to TJ's, but still deals. Segura Viudas Brut Rose is light and summery, Carpineto's Dogajolo (cab-sangiovese) is perfect for winter carbs and is so drinkable, after ordering it at a restaurant, I love it.

More to come with gifts for the home and maybe more for me or her as I stumble upon them...

Houston Tested

I love my design magazines. I especially like to revisit them to see what still resonates with me or if there's something new/relevant for a project that I missed the first time around. My office it stacked high with issues of every shelter magazine from the last couple years. It's a magazine hoarders paradise.

Mary Brown's house in Houston, which was featured in Traditional Home, is one that still resonates with me months after the initial viewing. I love houses that are beautiful and functional, but most of all comfortable/approachable. A house should be lived in and not off limits. She did a beautiful job of creating that kind of environment for her husband and 4 boys! (if you need to test any home products - a house of boys is a great place)

I love the simplicity of this room. Not to mention it has my favorite elements, sisal and shiplap. I love the bold choice of her grandmothers settee covered in white cotton duck. White makes people so nervous but it is so livable and fresh. Love the pop of turquoise and lavender to make the room come alive

She repeats the color palette of grey and off-white throughout most of the house which helps make all the transitions seamless.

The barn doors in the family room are insane. It's nice to see the traditional X pattern instead of a modern barn door. The brick herringbone floors that were salvaged from her grandmother's house add history and visual interest.

The open kitchen and casual dining that leads to the butlers pantry and the dining room. Simple and elegant.

I'm currently obsessed with skirted buffets and they are the perfect complement to all the wood in this room. Lovely.

But, the Master Bedroom is my favorite room in the house. The color palette is too die for - lavender, grey and white. Those bed linens and bench (swoon).

Which carries over to the sitting room and the Master Bathroom.

I also love the more formal library with it's painted grey mouldings, tonal curtains, English arm chairs, citrine x-benches and Lucite end tables.

The young boys room is preppy and fun

While the oldest boy's room is a little more urban hotel chic. The grey walls, white antler, and grey flannel give it a touch of sophistication while still tying it to the overall color palette of the house.

The exterior of the house remains period-less. Just like the inside.

Rustic Love

Checking out Pinterest this morning, I ran across these images of a chic lodge restaurant. I was immediately captivated and wishing I was headed there this weekend for a little R&R. This is how I like to see Rustic done. Living in the Northwest there is an overkill of natural honey wood, plaid, fishing images and Cabella's log furniture when you think of a cabin. You don't have to decorate with an obvious theme to get an amazing cozy retreat.

The greyed/limed logs, bleacheded antler chandeliers, rich chocolate and camel leather, fur pillows and trim on the drapes (amazing!) combined with chocolate velvet and white linens are so peaceful. I could sit here all day and sip a hot chocolate or Kahlua and cream.

I'm not sure where this Restaurant is, but I want to go. Wishing you a wonderful weekend.

Mix Master

It feels like it's been a long week and it's only Monday. I needed some inspiration and came across this beauty. I love the simplicity of this room and it's eclectic nature. A little french, a little modern, a little metal. Best of all is the unexpected color palette - so serene yet fresh.

Of course it's from the mix master himself, Nate Berkus. His work is always refreshing and inspiring.

Metallic hides

I'm loving the metallic zebra and cowhides. They are so subtle yet add the right about of glamour and texture to a room. Great for someone who's a little nervous about the traditional hides OR for someone who wants the next HOT home decor item.

House of LoLo in Portland Oregon uses one to glam up the boutique. The boutique was featured in the new issue of House of Fifty magazine.

I love the color and sophisticated statement they make. I can't wait to use a metallic hide to add a little unexpected glamour to a room.

Unconventional

Lazaro Rosa Violan's Barcelona kitchen made me rethink the American standard of a kitchen: Why can't it look like a great, interesting space as long as it can still function as a kitchen and gathering space?

It's been crammed down our throats that a kitchen has a working triangle, it has to have a laundry list of "super durable" things like solid surface counters (although a lot of people can't even imagine a marble counter as they've been incorrectly told its too high maintenance (they actually get better with age and wear -- it's why they've been putting them in for hundreds of years!)), a tile or stone floor ("heavens no on hardwood") and a huge island with lots of seating.

Our kitchen blueprint has become gigantic- literally everything, including multiple kitchen sinks, multiple dishwashers, multiple eating areas. And it makes great sense until, well, until it doesn't. When you see how others live and you realize it can be unnecessary and all-consuming.

This kitchen has soul and it reflects the lives of the owners. It breaks all the rules and I love it. Herringbone wood floors (I DIE) and a wood counter island. No upper cabinets - just lower shelves with all the necessary tools in reach. An island without bar stools -- what a refreshing sight. A funky support column that adds character instead of being dressed up to look like a theater set. An unfinished open beam ceiling that marries beautifully with large scale crown moulding and a tabletop lamp instead of pendants. But the piece de resistance - the Asian screen that is the backdrop for the entire room. The room is stunning in an unconventional way.

This is a kitchen I want to cook in, celebrate in and just hang out in. It's so beautiful that it makes you want to create beautiful food. Maybe we should re-think the rules of what a kitchen is supposed to be and start creating kitchens that reflect who we are and what we need.

Everyone, meet my soapbox, but I'm a woman inspired.

Coffee Heaven

I've been thinking about espresso machines for over a year. I can't function in the morning without a cup of coffee. I literally can't even shower until that first sip hits my mouth. And with the Fall weather (I mean rain) in Seattle, I knew I needed something stronger to get me through this season.

So I did some online research and talked to everyone I could before walking into Sur La Table one day. I walked home with this new dreamy machine. The Nespresso & DeLonghi Lattissima. It's the BOMB. It's literally changed me life. I put in a pod, push one button and it steams the milk for me and makes the perfect espresso. It's idiot proof - which is what I need in the morning.

I don't know how I ever survived without one. Sorry Starbucks, you won't be seeing me in the drive through twice a day anymore now that my coffee at home is so much better and cheaper.

Try it. Maybe it will change your life too. It's the little things in life that make you the happiest. And I'm one happy lady with my Grande Vanilla Latte in my own kitchen anytime time of day I want.

Mixed up art

I love symmetry and order, especially when it comes to art displays and gallery walls. I think it must make me feel like everything in the world is right and under control. But lately I've been loving art walls where everything isn't placed just so. Spaces where they've mixed different sizes, different genres and different colored frames. It's so much more interesting and it feels so friendly and approachable. Like the art is your friend and they just want you to curl up and stay awhile. Maybe it's because it's Fall and I want to hibernate, but these rooms really speak to me.

What do you think? Do you like your art orderly or a little mixed up?

Going Paperless

I was thinking about the whole idea of invitations the other day. I love getting a real invitation in the mail for an event. It makes the whole thing feel more special -- it helps create excitement around the event and it just seems to make even the smallest thing feel legitimate.

The problem with invitations is that we all seem to be living on our computers and the best way to get a hold of someone these days is through email. Not to mention, I'm hoping I'm not the only one who forgets to get the mail once in a while? All of this has lead to the huge popularity of evite and the like, but the problem is... I really hate their formatting! It's tacky. I totally use them, but every time my heart longs for the paper invite I could have sent if I had a grasp on things.

So, meet Paperless Post. It's not free, but it's inexpensive and the designs are great. It's what I would have sent in the mail in most of cases, but instead it's online and it even "opens" like a real invite.

Butler Pantries

(I'm getting super creative with my titles, aren't I?)

I thought I'd post some photos of my favorite "butler pantries". I feel like the whole idea of a butler pantry is the epitome of livin' the dream in the States. I mean, if you have a butler pantry, you don't have a butler anymore (well... most of us don't) but it means if you did, then you could stash them there. AND if you have one, then you've got space to spare in the house for a hallway between dining and kitchen... i.e., you've finally made it. Well, you know what I mean :)

Traditionally, a butler's pantry is the space between the kitchen and dining room and it was meant for staging and stashing -- dumping plates after being cleared (so as not to get in the way of whoever was making the next course in the kitchen) and having new plates from the kitchen within quick access so there wasn't lag-time between serving guests.

Now, you see a lot of variations on the idea of what that pantry is. In some houses, it's a large second pantry that is accessible to the kitchen and dining, but it's not necessarily a thru-way. Other cases show a large second storage area with additional appliances and counter space. These are great, but for all intents and purposes, it's not a "butler's pantry" as a design professor would allow you to call it.

Regardless, if you have the space to devote to beautiful cabinets and accessory appliances, by all means, have at it.

Branca Chicago Store

I mentioned that I was going to Visit Alessandra Branca's store in Chicago on my trip. The warehouse sale is going on right now so the store is stacked and packed with incredible finds. While it wasn't merchandised in her usual vignettes/roomscapes - it was still incredible and lived up to my expectations. She has amazing taste and style and you could see her aesthetic in every item and detail in the store.

I apologize up front for the quality of my pictures - I really need the new iPhone as my 3GS is really not living up to my expectations.

The famous black and white awning with an incredible red Chinese Chippendale bench.

This dinning table made me weak in the knees. And the Cameroon Feather Headdress was amazing.

Furniture stacked high on racks. Those French blue and white chairs are too die for. The back is a dark navy velvet and even the gimp around the nail heads is blue and white ticking. Divine. Wish I had a client who needed navy and white. Anyone?

The other side of the rack had amazing chandeliers in addition to more chairs.

The downstairs featured a lot of fabulous tables, artwork and dishes.

And this traditional Edwardian Library Bookcase circa 1910 England. I would kill for this piece. Kill.

The upstairs was piled high with chairs, glassware and linens. But, the best part was the pop of her signature red in the 2 bookcases that flanked each side of the room and their matching library sconces. Check out that ceiling while you're at it as well.

This side was all clear glass or white ceramic (except for those turquoise pieces)

While this bookcase was mostly colored glass.

I can't wait to go to the store on my next trip to Chicago to see it in it's non-sale state. If you aren't in Chicago or aren't going soon, you are in luck as all these items are available on her website. Sale ends Oct. 1st.

Good Finds: J.Crew + Flat-Rate Shipping (Finally!)

Surprise, surprise! It's a post devoted to J.Crew. I probably defer to them too much, but I find that my clothes from J.Crew tend to be the ones I wear season after season and the jewelry still comes in at the top of my list every time. It's costume jewelry, sure, but it can change an outfit from one look to a totally different vibe.

My good find for today is old news if you have been to J.Crew's site lately, but they FINALLY changed their shipping policy. If you remember, shipping used to be based on the overall dollar amount of your purchase, making it all the more painful to shop online seriously since it meant you'd pay buckets in shipping! It was redic!

Well, now it's a flat-rate and even free on orders of $175+. So to celebrate, I've posted my favorite jewelry -- something small that would have felt ridiculous paying $30 dollars or more to ship that you can now have for a more reasonable fee.

More Chicago Scouting

I can's say it enough... I LOVE CHICAGO.

We went to dinner at Ristorante Quartino the night before the race to carbo-load. My body is built from bread and cheese, no joke, it's practically all I eat (so much so that my family blames my kids' limited diet on my own, naturally). My point, is that an Italian restaurant with free-reign to order any bread and cheese item it absolute heaven.

Even better though, is a carb heaven with good decor!! I snapped these pictures whenever I could. The bathroom especially was so cool. And does anyone else remember the Borax soap? The granular, gritty soap that you'd pile into your hand and then make that great soapy paste? Like a total nerd, I got excited to see it in the bathroom and the youngins' at the sink with me had no idea what I was talking about when I said that it was the soap of my youth. It's what we had in elementary school exclusively. Cue their blank stares at the crazy lady in the bathroom reminiscing.

Love these French bar stools with the yummy leather and nailheads and bent wood.

These floors are what started my bathroom binge of photos. I love the pattern in the tile.

The frosted glass in the bathroom actually butts up to the mens bathroom, so you can get a little bit of commotion behind the glass, but the ladies room still feels private. It's a very cool feature.

Our Annual Sushi Party

The weekend before we left for Chicago, Brian and I hosted our annual sushi night with our good friends the Dengers. Brian and Mason have what I can only describe as an intense love-affair with sushi, which unfortunately, I don't share. BUT, I will say they do a pretty good job of convincing me once a year, because together they put together an insane night of food -- it's pure madness in the kitchen.

My contribution is getting the house ready for our group of friends and making sure the liquor cabinet is stocked and the table is laid. I don't know if I've kvetched about this year's Seattle summer (oh... I have?) but thankfully the party fell in the middle of a heat-wave and we ate outside. Not going to lie, a table for an Asian-themed dinner is probably not one that springs a ton of ideas to my mind without going over-the-top theme, so I kept it simple. I used potted Kale plants as my flowers and lit the table with lots of tea lights running the length of a long, extra-wide table. There are so many beautiful serving dishes that go along with sushi, that it didn't take much else.

And more than anything, it's a festive but casual night with friends, so no need to go crazy when the food is the star.

I could post so many pictures of food, but I know this isn't a food blog so I'll just show a few that I thought were particularly gorgeous -- Mason should seriously consider a second career as a chef, especially with his trusty sous chef (aka Brian).

Jonathan Adler - Manifesto

While I was in Chicago I popped into the Jonathan Adler store to do a little client shopping. I was expecting chic furniture, lamps, lighting, rugs - all the usual you would expect from Jonathan Adler. I wasn't expecting a free therapy session. I laughed out loud when I saw their manifesto.

Love it. It adds levity to interior design. I had an amazing trip and I will post pictures as soon as I come out of my re-entry mode.

Alessandra Branca

I'm off to Chicago for a long weekend of shopping... and the September 11th half-marathon. Yes, I'm doing another one. I'm super excited for the pizza and beer post race. But, seriously, I love Chicago. It's one of my favorite cities. The scenery, the people, the food, the shopping.

First stop on my trip is a visit to Alessandra Branca's store. The Italian- born award wining designer is known for her use of color, pattern and layering. I can't wait to see her store in person. I'll try to report back with some great shopping images.

Falling for Grey Kitchens

Summer finally arrived for Labor Day Weekend and just in time for the kids to go back to school - go figure. While it's finally hot, you can feel Fall in the morning and evening air. While I'm not quite ready, these grey kitchens help set the mood for Fall. So beautiful and dramatic - just like the approaching Fall weather.

Grey, calcutta and mirrors. What's a girl to do.

Paltrow's kitchen is more black than grey but I had to include it in the bunch.

That hood and mullion detailing combined with the white shiplap walls...

I love the range hood and sconces in this kitchen.

Kitchen by Graciela Rutkowski Interiors - one of Seattle's own. A classic, old world kitchen that will never age.

Martha Stewart may have started the grey craze with her kitchen and rightly so - it's pure perfection.

Her espresso area with two-toned/mixed material cabinets below and open shelves above. Love the white counter with this combination.

A more country approach with the free-standing cream island to warm up the grey.

While this Tracery Interiors kitchen is mostly white, the grey island and dark floors create the same drama and impact without having to commit to an entire grey room. Great if you live somewhere like the Northwest where light is precious.

So while I'm hoping Summer will stick around for another month, these kitchens make me excited for the cozy Fall months ahead.

Gone to the dogs

Being the last official week of "summer" there's so much to do to get the kiddies ready to go back to school next week. Because of this you could say my week has kind of "gone to the dogs". So, I thought it would be appropriate to share some fabulous built in dog kennels. I dream of having a space like this someday. Of course, knowing my dog, she would never dream of using it as it would mean she's a dog.

I love that these designs incorporate your dog into your house and your life. It's not an after thought and it doesn't take up valuable floor space like most dog beds.

Genius and so pretty too.

New Favorites from Restoration Hardware

When my gigantic Fall Restoration Hardware Source book arrived I was not expecting much. However, I was pleasantly surprised by some of the new items. Here are some of my favorites.

Love this mirror. It would also be great painted a high gloss white, silver or gold leafed.

This is a great statement mirror.

Classic black and white sketches

and architectural etchings that would be fabulous as a large wall collection.

Looks like they were finally listening as they now have a couple sofas that come in a normal size length and depth. Not many people can use a 90" long or a 42-44" deep sofa.

Love this 1940's inspired Barrel chair. And it comes in a dark finish as well as their aged oak. Yeah!

The Trelliage nightstand and dresser.

A great Parisian inspired table. Wish that had done this table in a antique silver finish as well.

A iron and crystal French inspired chandelier. This comes in multiple sizes but the little one is my favorite.

A great mercury lamp. It's nice to have other options than crystal. And this lamp comes in a couple of great sizes.

And then the piece de resistance, the Ben Soleimani (of Mansour rugs fame) rug collection is to die for. Now this is high-end rug design for the masses. They didn't skimp on the materials and go for acrylic or olefin. These are gorgeous wool rugs woven in India. The prices are amazing for the design and quality. A couple of my favorites.

(okay, so this ones pretty expensive but it's a show stopper)

Good work Restoration. Now try to add even more normal scale pieces and other finishes back into your line for those of us that don't have a gigantic french or European inspired house.

Chris Barrett - eye candy

A little Pacific Palisades eye candy by Los Angeles interior designer Chris Barrett to start your week off right.

The arched doors and rustic beams combined with the stucco fireplace are what first attracted me to this house. Regular french doors wouldn't have made quite the same statement. This room has such a great refined yet casual feel.

The kitchen is the perfect complement to the living room and adds warmth with the masculine caramel tones.

Love, love, love the dining room off the living room and kitchen. I also like how both rooms share the flat screen t.v. My family would live in this room.

A decidedly normal looking media room for a house in Los Angeles. I may hyperventilate because of that door! Doors and windows can make or break a house. REALLY.

Heaven. What I wouldn't give to wake up in this room everyday.

Those beams and doors again... Breathtaking.

The window in the bathroom echos the curved doors throughout the house. I also like that they used the dark cabinets throughout the house to add continuity instead of changing them in every room - one of my pet peeves. The builder and designer paid attention to the details without going overboard.

A lovely way to start the week.

Blue Hill Stone Barns + A Wedding

In June my younger sister took off to NYC for a whirlwind weekend to celebrate the marriage of one of her good friends from college. It was so cool to hear about this wedding when she got back because it was so atypical and so beautiful. In a lot of ways, this wedding was super special to her because she and her boyfriend were just 2 of about 50 people who got the pleasure of celebrating with her friends, but also, the setting was to die for and the dinner was out of this world.

The friends -- Rebecca and David -- are huge foodies. Rebecca works in public policy, specifically food & agriculture policy and David is very well-known in the coffee industry (he MC's world barista cups as one of the perks of being a coffee genius and super charismatic). In addition to guests from all over the states, there were quite a few continents represented through the coffee world. One of the things that I love about this wedding is that Rebecca and David chose to focus on the dinner and celebration rather than the "normal" hoopla of a wedding that so often takes the attention.

So what do you get when you combine great friends, a Rockefeller property, a dinner at one of Food and Wine Magazine's 10 life-changing restaurants, and amazing coffee from all over the world? I'm not sure an answer could do it justice.

Entering in to the main courtyard. BHSB is about 45-minutes outside of the city but it feels like a different world.

Usually diners sit on the patio for outdoor meals, however, the majority was occupied by the wedding guests.

I'm told Rhubarb Collins were enjoyed here while this picture was taken. Rebecca is a sweet-talker because that drink is so good, it's usually not made en masse for functions. She is very persuasive.

Yes, her boyfriend is on his phone, but only to take pictures for himself -- it was that pretty.

I love this fencing that weaves throughout the property.

Isn't this amazing? They don't call it "Stone Barn" for nothing.

Another view of the inner courtyard from the outside. You can see the great beds that sprinkle the space -- my favorite mix of order and chaos in a garden.

Those clerestory windows add such a great mix of rustic with this more industrial edge. It's a working property and a working farm after all -- not all things can be rustic when it comes to needing function. Get a load of those doors.

Overlooking the valley, you can see some of the hothouses that grow all the amazing produce and keep the farm going. It's a center for food and agriculture so aside from the restaurant, the 80-acres creates a lot of harvest.

Their menu for the evening -- which doesn't even capture the amazingness they say.

There is so much more I could say about the concept behind BHSB and how amazing the idea of sustainable agriculture is when combined with a restaurant, but it's been said before by people much more informed than I. You can read more about BHSB and the Stone Barns Center for Food & Agriculture on their websites and the additional links provided on them.

Kleinhelters office

I've always admired Lee Kleinhelter's store Pieces, Inc. I love finding amazing pieces and refurbishing them so I've always watched her in awe. The woman has style and a keen business sense. When I saw this article in Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles about her and her husband Kevin's new office space I was hooked.

Their combined space showcases his custom construction and renovation firm projects and her design sensibilities. While housing office space for both of them, there's a with a joint meeting space and conference area for clients. Dreamy. Really - it's all I really want.

The outside gives you a hint of the magic to come from K2 Construction- modern simplicity.

But you can see Lee's influence in the furniture, wallpaper and accessories once you step inside. The meeting area is spectacular. The black doors lead to Kevin's work tools and outdoor gear so he's ready at a moments notice. Love the pop of yellow.

Her office - sophisticated with a touch of color and texture. The David Hicks wallpaper (again with a touch of yellow) is to die for. The bookcases and Lucite desk with the amazing vintage console - speechless.

His office - modern masculine. She used her signature custom basket pendants and Lucite desks in both offices to create a sense of continuity in the space. Almost a reverse of her office but it gives the client the same overall feeling.

The details make every room. And these rooms don't disappoint.

This couple delivers the design GOODS. A beautiful creative space for them to enjoy while they grow their businesses.

Can you fall in love with a hallway? Guess so, because that's what happened when I saw this hallway by Steven Gambrel. The level of detail is sheer perfection.

I'm a sucker for built-ins, but then add the custom runner and spectacular light fixtures and I'm done. Three window seats for curling up with a book - heaven.

Southern Style

I'm hooked on the clean, muted palettes of these spaces. I do love color as well, but I must say I'm most attracted to the subtle southern style.

I love Southern Style. I often tell people that I'm living in the wrong part of the country as I'm so drawn to everything Southern - especially design.

Southerner's USE their houses. Entertaining is a way of life. So in turn, their house represents them and they invest in creating the perfect space for their lifestyle. There's no way a Southerner would build a huge house and then fill it with Ikea furniture.

I thought I'd do a series this week on some of my favorite less know Southern design.

I love the carefree style of this Mia James house in Baton Rouge.

She used a neutral base and then choose a signature color palette of blues to create a sense of uniformity and flow in the home. Even right down to her outdoor spaces and her daughter's room. Continuity is so important in creating a peaceful and beautiful home.

This house has the right amount of interesting pieces without being overdone. That's the kind of Southern Style I love.

But then I saw Bonesteel Trout Hall today on One Kings Lane. I love their clean traditional design. They are geniuses at creating timeless yet fun rooms. Just the jump start I needed for my Monday.

Nate Berkus Associates - Lauren Gold

Lauren Gold and Sasha Adler's project in the premier issue of TradHOME was one of my favorite projects this year. I'm still dying over their casual chic beach inspired dining room.

This months Lonny magazine features Lauren's Chicago apartment and a glimpse into their office space at Nate Berkus Associates. She has a great down-to-earth yet traditional style. You can see the influence of Nate in her work and in her own space.

I love how collected her space is - a mix of unexpected modern and vintage. She believes that if you buy what you love, you will find a place for it and make it work. The mirror, contemporary art and Milo Baughman chairs are a great juxtaposition. They make you want to soak in every detail to make sure you don't miss anything.

Dying over the monochromatic styled bookcases (black, white and cream) and the wheat table with the Ballard Louis chairs. They add the perfect balance to the gold table and relate to the color story of the bookcases.

Love the dark walls in her home office and bathroom. Unexpected, dramatic and cozy all at the same time.

And if her apartment wasn't enough, their workspace at Nate Berkus Associates has me envious.

She is a star in my book. I look forward to seeing more of her projects.

Workspaces: When they aren't pulling their weight...

I'm coming off of the weekend after massive organizing. Maybe I should even capitalize that since it feels like a capital-letter change. It's amazing what some tossing out can do to your sanity! I focused my energy on my office which had become overgrown with fabric memos, tile samples, invoices... woof, it was bad. Not to mention that some of my family's belongings had crept in, making me feel like I was absolutely going to go BONKERS because my workspace was feeling like it had too much going on to be productive. So this weekend, I adopted the motto of "Toss it! Toss it! Toss it!" and also created some better organized spaces.

I'm about to head to The Container Store to get the last of my systems in place, but a few huge changes to my office will include a console as you walk in and making my big worktable allergic to miscellaneous crap (It always seemed to find my piles of papers and filing... wonder how that happened...?) The console will hold magazines on the shelves and designated bins on the top for returns to the design center, mail, etc. right as I go out the door for errands and in the door with bags. And not having the magazines on my office shelves frees up room for more of my office paperwork. Things are feeling good... finally!

Birthday fog

Excuse my last of posts... this past week has been my "summer Christmas" or week of birthday hell. In my family alone we have 5 birthdays from the 17th to the 24th. Not to mention that it was the last week of school! I'm exhausted. Happy, but exhausted.

Shopping Trip: Portland's Bedford Brown

Over Memorial Day weekend, we threw the kids in the car and got out of dodge. It was a last minute trip to Portland under the guise of my 10-year-old meeting up with buddies down there for a lacrosse tournament, but I had some other things on the brain -- hitting up my favorite Portland shops while the kiddies (and husband) tracked down Voodoo Donuts and played in the pool.

Every time I hit Portland (and yes, I do feel like it's a "hit" because I always seem to be short on time and end up barreling through the stores) I make sure to visit Bedford Brown. It's the best and it's so different every time. They pride themselves on turning things around quickly because they buy in low quantities, making it so it's always special and you get something that isn't at many places. My pictures will never do the store justice and I left out the AMAZING stoneyard portion of the shop with great concrete planters, Asian ceramics and garden objects (the good news is, last year I posted about it, so you can get a feel for the amazingness here).

I did, however, get a few shots of the greenhouse where fabulous plants can be found and the shop, which has lots of great stuff in right now.

The store is broken out in to different areas, so this is near the back as you transition from storefront to greenhouse -- it's a big white tented "outdoor" set-up.

I love this media cabinet. Awhile back, I desperately wanted a client to get it but she was nervous about getting it without seeing it in person... If only we had a Bedford Brown in Seattle...

This picture is being sent out to another client because I want that chandelier to go above her dining table -- how about it Keri? Ha!

Amazing, all of it -- the walls, the chairs, the turquoise.

These on either side of a door would be spectacular. I'm such a sucker for things like this. Add in some striped awnings and some topiaries and you could just stick a fork in me.

They just got new paint colors in and this coral in person is stunning.

Spotted! LBD in the PNW

Of course there are more black doors in Seattle, but I walked by this door in Laurelhurst the other day and I had to take a picture, because it's a perfect example of a pretty black door with lovely detailing. I'm bummed with myself for not centering the photo and getting a better picture, but I felt really stalker-ish and there were other people out and about who would have wondered what this crazy lady was doing taking pictures. That is the anti-hippy-dippy door.

The LBD - Little Black Door

The LBD makes every house a little bit better in my opinion. It adds architectural detail and glamour all at once. It's a staple for the exterior...

I would be the happiest girl in the world to come home to this front door everyday. Turquoise and black. Wish there were more front doors done the English way and less Northwest hippy dippy.
Or double french doors instead of the standard six panel or craftsman door.

Hello double french doors, pea gravel and topiaries. Heaven.
The door elevates the entire house.

This picture needs no explanation.

But black doors really add drama and dimension to an interior space.

Amazing doors to an even more amazing closet.

Even barn doors look better in black.

These black french doors (instead of the usual white) make the black and white kitchen less predictable and add warmth.

These Windsor Smith rooms need no introduction. Her use of strong dark navy or black makes a statement and adds great architectural detail to the rooms.

So what are you waiting for - grab that can of black glossy paint and start transforming your drab white into the LBD.

It's Summer Somewhere...

Summer Palace Fret, that is.

I had to share this project with you because the wallpaper just went in on a powder room and it's SO pretty. I have to preface this by saying that this powder room has 14-foot ceilings, so even with the wainscotting, this was still 8 feet of wall that got wallpaper. Also, I had to document the amazing crown. With a ceiling height that high, we had to use some massive architectural details-- and with the great white semi-gloss, it absolutely shines. It's one of my favorite elements of the house. I'll have an update later with the mirror and complete shots of the powder. It's been really fun having a client who was game for such a great paper and every time we round the stairs in this new construction project and get a little peek of it when the door is open, it makes me smile.

Paris Peonies

It's back to the grind after the busy 3 kid filled day weekend. And this week is CRAZY. I have a house that's undergoing a complete transformation with paint and applied panel moulding. I can't wait to see the finished result, but first, it takes a lot of coordination and skilled workers to pull it off. And that's just one of the projects for this week. Phew.

So when I saw this picture of Peonies from the Paris flower market I instantly felt a little more relaxed. They are my favorite flower and the season is so short. I've got to enjoy them as much as possible while I can.

I've been crazy for the Antelope rug by Stark for years. While I love zebra, (and you know I think every room should have a little zebra) I'm loving the antelope rug for it's warm neutral background. Not Just for Kids - Serena & Lily - Part II

I'm not fond of tooting my own horn but this one felt like it needed to be put out into the world or it wouldn't be real.

Almost a year ago I had a milestone birthday. If you've been reading my blog for awhile you know that I was running frequently around that time as I was planning to run the Seattle Rock N Roll Half Marathon in June 2010 to honor my milestone birthday. Then in November 2009 I hurt my knee and while I was recovering my running partner moved to Singapore. So, needless to say, I stopped running. It was the perfect excuse. And stopped doing anything else for that matter.

Fast forward to 8 weeks ago. My older sister sent me a text and asked me if I'd run the Eugene Oregon Half Marathon with her and a couple friends. I didn't reply to that text for almost a week as I stewed on how I wanted to respond. Then I remembered that I never completed that big birthday goal, and as this run was on May 1st, it would still count in my milestone year.

So we jumped in and started an 8 week running program of 4 days a week and a long run each weekend. It was brutal but nice to have each other for motivation and daily stress release/therapy. We had such deep conversations over those 2 1/2 hour runs! We learned a lot about ourselves and each other.

Any this past Sunday at 7 am we embarked upon our journey. It was a sunny and cold morning. Perfect running weather. AND....it was life changing.

Never has anything in my life made me feel so strong and capable. As each mile of the 13.1 passed, I felt stronger and stronger. I didn't have to will myself to keep going as I did in my daily runs - for some reason my body just floated that day. Hearing my name as I ran through the finish line at the famous Hayward Field was incredible. The whole mind-over-matter saying of "if you think you can do it, you can" is true.

We are running the Chicago Half Marathon in September and maybe, just maybe, we'll sneak in the Seattle Rock n Roll just for fun.

Never in my life did I expect to do this, but I'm glad I did.

T-Ball Demon

The last few days have proved that spring is trying to make an appearance in Seattle, but oh my gosh, it's sure testing my limits. Yesterday was another gray, wet day and it made me want to throw in the towel and crawl back into bed.

But you know it's really spring when you have to start sitting on cold, wet bleachers to watch your kids swing at a t-ball stand... I mean... When you get to watch your kids play sports and learn how to be a part of a team!!! (Does that second one make me sound more enthusiastic? A little bit? Good).

But my favorite part of t-ball is this little face in those white pants:

A little bathroom glamour

I spent the day working on a clients master bathroom and powder room. Bathrooms should be functional (of course - that goes without saying) but should also reflect their owners sense of style. Whether it's ultra modern, cottage, traditional, etc - every room should tell a story about the people who live there. These bathrooms show the glamorous side of their owners.

TRADhome - Lauren Gold & Sasha Adler

Every one's talking about the collaboration between Traditional Home and Lonny Magazine - TRADhome. There are some great designers featured in the premier issue. But this house in Arizona from Lauren Gold & Sasha Adler of Nate Berkus Design took my breath away. This house has the perfect balance of traditional and unexpected modern pieces to be timeless.

The dining room might be one of my all time favorite dining rooms. The rustic farm table with the glam dining chairs and chandelier combined with grass cloth and great casual striped rug. Dreamy and inviting.

Love the entry and gallery hallway. How cute are Lauren and Sasha!

The Great Room is a show stopper as well. Perfect restraint used to make it interesting yet livable. I love everything about this room.

Hello Paris bistro chairs and back splash... And the casual eating area is perfection. My favorite dining chairs and table combined with casual kid friendly benches.

Master bedroom and bath - again the perfect blend of antiques with modern clean lined pieces.

Bottom line - this house is perfection.

I've finally found "the one"

Remember when I used to do "good finds" on Fridays? Well, I thought I'd lean back in to it and right now, there is one thing in particular that is rocking my world. I've finally found the best mascara.

For years I have struggled with mascara ending up under my eyes mid-way through the day. Every brand I tried, it never helped. I wore waterproof and it crumbled, water-resistant and it gave me raccoon eyes almost instantaneously. Only made worse by the fact that I am super lazy about properly taking it off, so the waterproof mascara was caking up for days.

Enter Trish McEvoy's mascara. It's totally different and took some getting used to, but it's the kind that comes off in "tubes" with just my face wash and doesn't crumble off during the day because of it's crazy mascara voodoo-technology. I LOVE IT -- anything that makes me look a little less tired is tops in my book.

It's a good find.

No pants, No Shoes, No Service

My family tells me that my house has "no rules." I don't understand what they are talking about...

Hmmmm. This is just a typical day in my house. I turned around from furniture scouting for a client and my six year-old was helping himself to a milkshake. Without ANY pants. Just shirt and black socks. Brooks can rock that look like no other.

The good news though is that my house is the testing ground for all my clients. If I tell you it will hold up, chances are, I know all too well. Because either someone has pooped on it (dog or babies) , spilled wine on it (me), kicked a ball against it (my oldest) or rammed his head into it (my youngest).

This is no ordinary house! It's hard for my neat-nick husband, but good for you. Pray that we make it until college in one piece.

Have you looked on Zara lately? Stuff is good, real good.

Two things I love about zara: guilt-free trends and being in Seattle, it's not available in a brick and mortar store, so it's relatively secret. I used to feel that way about H&M -- when I'd go out of town, I'd pick up a few things and then back home, no one had seen my purchases, so it was total secret squirrel bargains that no one else had. Zara is still best in my opinion because the quality is better than others at this price point and the trends are done in a more age appropriate, wearable way.

Market Report: Soaking Tubs

I got a great email from a reader yesterday urging me to do a tub post, because she's considering remodeling her bathroom -- thank you for your email, it's a great idea. Her question to me was specifically about soaking tubs and the advantages or disadvantages of various styles, as well as materials that retained heat. Jets aren't her thing because of how much of a pain they are to clean, and frankly, I've never liked the idea of jetted tubs. It's just never the look I go for if I'm starting with a clean slate -- save it for the backyard and wine coolers ;)

I pulled a few images that are always my go-to's when concepting. To me, they are all timeless and upscale from top to bottom, and all of them have awesome tubs.

Also, what a great treatment with the panel moulding-esque treatment to the tub. A really inexpensive trick with pencil that makes the shower/tub area feel very custom and elegant.

M. Elle Designs

Like you're surprised to see this one. I think it is on every designer's brain permanently. The tub from Lefroy Brooks is insane. I would die to even be in the same room with that tub. And what do you know, Kohler is making a verrry similar one.

This is how I like to do drop-in tubs. I prefer to incorporate them with a wainscotting-type surround and top it with stone. The same goes for "unincorporated" free standings: make it a statement of it's own if for some reason a traditional soaker doesn't work for you. For ideas, Michael Smith's Kallista tubs are all shown on the website like this.

Turner Davis Interiors

I think this is a great example of an amazing tub in a small bathroom. This tub is probably up against a corner, but it still feels luxurious because we get the wonderful shape and it was probably a creative solution for a small bath. Kohler, I believe, has corner tubs in this style.

Nate Berkus

Another silver tub, I know, but it's a great shape so indulge me. The bottom is more contemporary and the sides have a more severe angle to them. To me, it's a more masculine tub, almost industrial, and it would still be beautiful done in a monochromatic scheme.

On to options. I have to come clean, I love Faucetdirect.com. I think it's an awesome resource and their pricing is consistently great. I buy fixtures, fittings, the whole lot right from them because I've had great luck and their inventory on high-end items is extensive. Most of the tubs from below are from them and even on sale.

Porcher - $1000.05 (on sale)

Cast iron drop-in, I'm not as crazy about the shape, but overall it's a good looking tub that still incorporates cast iron at around the 1k mark. Because, of course, cast-iron is out there, but the challenge was to find them at the lower price range. In a traditional bathroom with high-end finishes, I think this shape would work well.

Porcher - $882.05 (on sale)

It's acrylic, but personally, I think that unless you upgrade to a radiant or inline heat system, you're never going to win the battle against cooling water. Cast iron will help, but if bath time is your only "me time" you probably are hiding out in there for awhile... it's not just me... right?

Kohler - $768.72

Another acrylic tub, but by Kohler and a great shape and an amazing price.

One of my first stops for cast iron tubs are always the salvage yards. This cast iron tub happens to already be in great condition and is gigantic - it's a two person coming in at 75". But because this one is already near perfect, you'll pay for it. I've found tubs in terrible shape and had them re-furbished at a cost that doesn't even compare to what I would have paid for one in good condition. To find a salvage yard near you, try searching for terms similar to "architectural building salvage (insert your city)." You will be surprised at the hole-in-the-wall places that pop up near you. Craigslist too -- I've driven way too far to pick up tubs, but for $150 bucks, it's worth it!

Cheviot

I also couldn't resist this cast iron beauty. It's beautiful and while it's not in the cheap and cheerful category, I don't think it's unreasonable for a freestanding soaker made from cast iron.

And while it's definitely not in the inexpensive category, for serious bathers who don't want to lose heat, MTI makes a large assortment of tubs with "Thermaltherapy" options. They have a number of patents out there so to a certain extent, they have got bathtub heating cornered. Their inline heating system is operated with on/off switching and does not necessitate jets in order to work. It gently recirculates the water -- no disruptions and no cooling off. Additionally, they have a "Radiance" heat system that can heat the tub itself, much like a radiant flooring. No chilly tubs and cold metal when you put your shoulders against it.

Good luck on the remodel, Katerina! Go for it, it's always worth it.

Ina & Her Garden

It sure doesn't feel like it, but the calendar is telling me it's April and that means it's time to start thinking about what I want to plant or how I'm going to make this yard I have presentable. One of my all-time favorite ladies also has one of my all-time favorite gardens -- Ina Garten. If you're in her camp, you can go on and on about her, just like me I'm sure. There is something about watching her shows that has the "books on tape" effect on me -- it's soothing and totally mellow. No squawking and exaggerated made-for-tv accents that so many shows have. And the occasional glimpses of her house are always a draw. Sometimes I daydream about a life filled with Hampton's houses, gay best friends in my kitchen and a cashing in my tight pants for a closet full of big, square Eileen Fisher smocks.

Her garden makes me swoon, so I found some pictures to try and get a better idea of what she has going on -- it's all beautiful. 20+ years of gardening and planning is paying off in folds.

Those boxwoods make me crazy, I love them so much.

My scanner is killing me lately, but here is a photo of her home as shown in one of her cookbooks.

Ina hosted an event for the East Hampton Historical Society, I thought this photo was a fun real-life example of her "how easy is that?" motto in action -- simple and elegant backyard cocktails.

There are some super sleuths out there --an aerial view of her estate shows the set up pretty well. The land was purchased a long time ago, and in the past two decades, they have added the gardens and fruit tree orchards. Recently, she built the barn/office/studio that was so widely covered in House Beautiful.

A little out-building off of her main house. In one of the interviews I read on her garden, she talks about her attempt at casual but organized and elegant gardens. Her philosophy is to edge every thing neatly and then have what's inside be organic and natural, but in a tight color palette. She doesn't stray far from purples, blues and greens. Her thought being that it helps everything look better longer, giving things order, even when the beds are actually less thought out.

I'm in love with this library from Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles. It's pure heaven. From the AMAZING light fixture and bookcases to the incredible blue and camel rug. Good rugs are hard to come by and this one literally stopped me in my tracks.

Let's not even discuss the Lucite partners desk - HELLO. And the camel leather chairs. The perfect amount of warmth and masculinity for this room. I could do some damage (by way of Internet shopping) at this desk, and then retire to the zebra egg chair (the chair is not my favorite choice for this room but mama does love her zebra) for a little rest.

Could these architectural bookshelves be styled any better? The color pop is perfect.

And the mirror let's you enjoy the room from any angle. Hopefully you're looking good as well otherwise it's no fun to have to see yourself all day.

Yup, it was that time. I was starting to look a little sad and rough around the edges.

Good Finds: Merin Designs Totes

I think there are few better ways to describe me than the term "Bag Lady." Sadly it's not because of an impressive collection of fabulous purses, but more so because of the amount of stuff I'm always carrying with me: my purse, a shopping bag filled with newly acquired samples, another bag devoted to a client, another bag for the spill-over that wouldn't fit in the first bag... you get my drift.

Two things have recently improved my situation: My girlfriend, Kea, who made a great bag through her company Merin Designs. And a wonderful client who so generously gave me one of the bags for Christmas (I think, because I clearly always had so much stuff with me).

They are awesome-- HUGE with capital letters, but filled with just right pockets to keep everything organized. It is a bag designed by a mom, for moms, but the difference is that it makes it possible to not feel like you cashed in your style chips just because you have lot of stuff to haul.

Another bonus, the bottom is waterproof -- "Keep your bottom dry" is her slogan and it really does, so come summer it does double-duty at the pool and in every other season, it stays dry in parking lots while you fumble with groceries or corral kids. Medium sizes are also now available, as well as the cutest little Mini Merin. AND, you can visit them on Facebook for news about fun events and promotions :)

The Reluctant DIY-er

A few weeks ago, I mentioned a little painting project I had taken on because I was loving the paint I found. I'm usually pretty reluctant to take on projects where I don't hire out a professional, because I think it's important for clients to get the best product they can when they work with a designer, but in this case, we decided to put in a little elbow-grease and I think it paid off.

When we found these sconces, it was hard to know what exactly the beads were made of -- we were hoping they were wood and were a pretty cream, but we knew that there was a chance that things are never as they seem. And, at the amazing price, there was room for a re-do and it would be worth it to either have the beads re-strung and swapped, or have them painted. Fast-forward a few weeks and the beads turn out to be shiny plastic and very yellow. Not so great against the new white paint and waincotting in my client's house.

We also decided that it was something that could maybe be done without the aid of a pro, so hence, my manicure of silver and bronze that lasted for far longer than I anticipated.

Here is a detail of how the paint looks -- it's a mix of bronze hammered base and a light coat of silver hammered paint. I wanted to make sure the white plastic beads were covered, but I was worried about having TOO much silver -- I didn't want it to look cheap or DIY and it HAD to look like it came that way. So hence the base of bronze and more blue tape than you can imagine in order to get every nook and cranny covered.

We also decided to wrap the plastic candle sleeves. My first thought was to use these awesome Kaarskoker sleeves, but sigh, they are out of the pattern I wanted. So we got creative with faux grasscloth in a dark silver.

Revival Home and Garden + Sunset

Leah Ball-Steen at Revival Home and Garden was featured in this month's Sunset magazine! Congratulations to her! I've been waiting for the issue to come out because it's always so exciting when a local gal gets published and she's so darn nice too boot, so I thought I'd share it for anyone who hasn't seen her fun house. You should really read the article, because it's a great example of before and after in our inflated Seattle housing market. Great job, Leah -- so excited for you!

You know I'm a sucker for boxwoods and these make me swoon. Not the mention how they changed the entire look of the house. Leah has southern roots - can you tell?

The morning news has been covering the passing of Dame Elizabeth Taylor -- Such a sad loss. What I always remember her for though (amongst her many humanitarian efforts) was her jewelry. Life as a Designer is So Glam...

You know when you go to cocktail parties or those little mixers where people play the "And what do you do?" game? Well, it always happens that when I say "Interior Designer" I can practically see the mental imagery of my job in their heads as they imagine it. I think it's great, especially because I know that I chose to do something that a lot of people would dream to do, but more often than not, that mental picture of my job is SO different than what it actually is. Because more often than not, the real job is very different and a lot harder.

This is a picture I snapped right before I drove across the city (and 3 bridges) in the pouring rain with 4 feet of panel molding sticking out my front passenger window. Do you see that rain too? Hello, Seattle. The best thing about this is that in an effort to be a law-abiding citizen, I flagged the protruding wood with my son's orange football sock. I don't even want to repeat what it looked like, or rather, what my husband said it looked like, before he saw me pull away.

All in the job description, I just wish I could show those cocktail-ers a few pages from my scrapbook, because most would include dusty bags and shoes, hands covered in tile thin-set and bottoms that almost always have a big white ring from having sat in the wrong place on a job site.

Getting dirty is part of the fun, but it probably doesn't do much for my image :)

How 'Bout That Office...

Lonny is out (as if you didn't already know) and I have to put up Kelly Wearstler's office, if for no other reason than sheer awe and good juju. That woman is a force, a pure storm of mogul-power: design, bedding, accessories and now fashion. But her office is major, not like I would have expected less. This is the stuff designer dreams are made of because I think all of us go to bed at night with thoughts of something even an 1/8th (a 1/16th?) of what she has built.

I once read in Town & Country (I think?) what her favorite things were and in addition to glam bags and books, she was asked what she snacked on: "Seaweed and Fresh Fruit."

To this day it is a running joke on the job whenever the phrase "I want to be Kelly Wearstler" is muttered, because the answer is always the same: "We won't be. We will never reach for seaweed and fruit."

But I digress, her office is stellar and confirmed rumor has it she has been working on a large project on Mercer Islaaahhnd (as my brother-in-law pronounces it). Rumor also has it among the crew that she is a peach to work with and yes, I asked... she does bring her own snacks.

This picture is hysterical, they both look so miserable!

I have to share a story of progress this morning because it makes me laugh. I mention my sister on this blog once in a while because we spend many days together working on projects, as she is also a designer and, let's face it, it's way more fun to oogle over a fabric with someone rather than alone. But this morning she comes in to work laughing over a story that makes me want to hand out an award to her boyfriend as a gift for the male gender. Two things earned him this prestige:

1. He came home last night with flowers for her for no reason.

And more importantly:

2. While watching House Hunters (yes, but during the PAC-10 Tournament timeouts), he says "I don't know if I like wood kitchen cabinets anymore. They're just never the right color."

Cue my sister doing a standing ovation on the inside, but trying to keep it together enough not to scare him. I should paint a little more of a picture by saying that this guy is not a metro, artsy type -- he is a basketball playing, stock analyzing, guy's guy.

Who no longer appreciates wood cabinets, because as he says, the color is just never right :)

A Round-Up of Finds

I've been painting some sconces for a client, so as I sit down to get some desk work done my paint-covered hands keep catching my eye. But, it got me thinking that I have run across some great products lately that are worth knowing about and it also gets me thinking that there are some cute little internet finds out there that sure seem worth talking about for spring (if this Seattle rain EVER STOPS!!)

EmersonMade has been all over the bloggosphere lately because of her awesome house. And I'm becoming a fan of her stuff, so effortless and let's face it, she models all her clothing and she looks like a pro doing it -- she is super cute. But this sweater and dahlia combo makes me wish I went to my "ladies who lunch" functions looking like this.

I need to start packing myself a lunch (ugh) because somehow I always find myself inconveniently out and about when I get hungry, and conveniently, right near a Starbucks or fast food place. It's a wonder I haven't keeled over from unhealthy eating lately. If I packed it in a baggu, maybe it would make the sad sandwich inside seem more interesting.

It's currently on my fingernails, but has anyone ever tried this line from Rustoleum? It's in the Universal line and the can sprays like an honest-to-god sprayer with a sqeeze-grip. Plus, I used the hammer finish and it is really cool looking. I'm in shock!

The color for spring they keep saying: nude. So I've got my eye on some little Tory Burch nude flats. I'm not going to be the girl in pumps for day, I've faced that fact, so maybe some of these adorable ballet flats will fit the bill.

My sister was on a road trip this weekend with girlfriends and all of them were raving about "The Beam." She uses a clarisonic, but the girls were saying this little red/blue light machine has been the cure to pesky adult breakouts and also reverses the signs of aging. She volunteers with college-aged girls who were using it for problem areas, but the red light can be used alone to increase collagen and reduces the appearance of wrinkles and redness. I have to say, I'm intrigued... anything to stop that clock!

Lastly, it's random but it makes me happy: iPhone covers on ebay. I took the plunge and invested a whole $1.99 in a matte gold iPhone 4 case in December and it's still going strong. It makes me happy every day and for $1.99 I feel like I cheated the system. AND I can always tell which phone is mine in the sea of smartphones.
